Sleep Apnea

Do you suffer from excessive sleepiness during the day, experience daytime or night time headaches, wake up with a sour taste in your mouth, or get complaints that you are snoring?

Well, you may be suffering from Sleep Apnea.

Snoring, according to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, "occurs when the soft tissue structures of the upper airway collapse onto themselves and vibrate against each other as we attempt to move air through them. This produces the sound we know as snoring. Large tonsils, a long soft palate, a large tongue, the uvula, and excess fat deposits in the throat all contribute to airway narrowing and snoring." For most people, snoring is just an annoyance to other people. For others, it is the first step toward upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) prior to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Sleep Apnea, according to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, or Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) "occurs when the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the throat. This blocks the upper airway, causing air flow to stop." This breathlessness can last between 5 and 50 seconds. Sleep Apnea occurs because the muscles of your throat relax. It can cause chest pain, loud snoring, headaches, and can awaken you during the night.
