Causes of Halitosis

More than just a social problem, halitosis (bad breath) is a dental and medical problem. Halitosis can be a sign of an underlying medical condition such as xerostomia (dry mouth), diabetes, or a gastrointestinal problem. Halitosis can also be a sign of periodontal disease, or a bacterial build up in the mouth.

Xerostomia - Dry Mouth

Some patients have a small amount of saliva and naturally have a dry mouth. Others have experienced a sense of dry mouth due to medications they are taking, medical conditions or due to mouthwash they are using. When your mouth is dry, saliva, which naturally carries oxygen, is unable to help cleanse the mouth, allowing bacteria to overgrow and halitosis to develop.

Post Nasal Drip

When a person has a post nasal drip due to a cold or allergies, mucous drains and coats the back of the tongue and throat.  This mucous is broken down in the mouth and causes halitosis.

Coffee

Coffee contains high levels of acids, which stimulate the production of bacteria in the mouth, which can also lead to halitosis.

Common Signs of Halitosis (Bad Breath)

  • A white coated tongue.
  • A sour, bitter, or metallic taste in the mouth.
  • Xerostomia or dryness in the mouth, extreme morning breath, or evidence of thicker saliva.
